🎧 When the World Gets Loud…

We live in a world full of noise.
TikTok. YouTube. Classroom conversations. Social pressure.
Everyone has a voice—and most of them are loud.

As parents, we already understand how important it is to remain one of the most trusted, valued voices in our children’s lives as they grow. But are we also prioritizing their ability to hear and trust God’s voice?

In today’s blog, we’re talking about how to help your children tune into the voice of God above all the noise.
(And chances are—you’ll find this helpful for yourself, too.)

🛠️ Why This Matters Now More Than Ever

The world is louder than ever.

Social media, peer pressure, other people’s opinions—even within the church—are constantly competing for your child’s attention.

And if we don’t teach them to recognize and trust God’s voice, the world will be more than happy to fill that silence.

But Jesus gives us a better way.

“My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me.” — John 10:27

He is the Shepherd.
We are His sheep.
And He intends for us to hear Him.

But with all the noise surrounding us, it takes intentionality to pause and listen.

🧠 What It Really Means to Hear from God

Let’s clear this up right away:

Hearing God’s voice isn’t usually audible.
It’s not about hearing a booming voice from the clouds.

More often, it looks like:

  • A gentle nudge or whisper in your spirit

  • A deep sense of peace

  • A specific verse that sticks in your heart

  • A conviction or insight that feels clearly from Him

  • A moment of clarity during prayer or journaling

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” — Isaiah 30:21

And here’s the good news:
Our kids don’t need to wait until adulthood to have a personal connection with God.

They don’t need to get a theology degree.
They just need to be taught that God is accessible, present, and faithful to speak when we seek Him.

Sadly, many Christians have lived their entire lives never realizing they can hear from God—because they expected it to sound like a loud, clear voice.

Yet, God already gave us His voice—in the form of His Word.
And through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we were also given the Holy Spirit (John 14:26), which means we now carry His presence with us everywhere we go.

We’re not relying on burning bushes anymore.
We have His Spirit and His Word—and that’s more than enough.

👂 Make It Normal in Your Home

Want to help your kids build this skill?

Start by making it normal to involve God in everyday decisions.

Say things like:

  • “Let’s ask God what He thinks about this.”

  • “Did anything come to mind while we were praying?”

  • “Let’s journal about this and ask God to help us understand.”

These small invitations make a big impact.

🌿 Creating Rhythms of Quiet & Connection

Here’s one of the biggest challenges today:

We don’t know how to be still.

Kids (and adults) are constantly stimulated.
A moment of quiet? We grab our phones.
Feeling restless? We turn on music.
Boredom? We fill it with distractions.

But this overstimulation is making it harder for kids to hear the voice of God—and it may even be contributing to rising anxiety.

We have to create space.

Try encouraging:

  • Journaling together

  • Still time after worship or devotionals

  • Nature walks to reflect on God’s creation

  • A daily screen-free hour for your whole family

It doesn’t need to be perfect—just intentional.
Help them learn to pause, to be still, and to listen.

🧭 Teaching Discernment and Trust

The hardest part isn’t hearing something—it’s knowing whether what you’ve heard is truly from God.

Here’s a practice I use and teach:

  1. Start with prayer.
Tell God what’s on your heart and what guidance you’re seeking.

  2. Sit in silence.
Be still and let the Lord speak—or simply give you peace.

  3. Journal.
Write your thoughts as a prayer. Ask questions. Pour it all out.
Then invite God to help you work through it—and keep writing.

You might be amazed how clear His voice becomes in that moment.

But also remember this:

If what you hear or feel contradicts Scripture, it’s not from God.

The only way to develop true discernment is by becoming deeply familiar with God’s Word.

The more time you spend in Scripture, the more you’ll know His heart.
And the more confidently your kids will begin to recognize what is from Him—and what isn’t.

“My sheep know My voice…”

🧘 Fasting to Make Space for God

Sometimes our hearts are willing—but our lives are just too loud.

That’s where fasting comes in.

Fasting is about creating space for spiritual clarity by giving something up. It might be:

  • Social media

  • TV

  • Sugar

  • Music

  • Or even coffee (yes, ouch)

“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” — Joel 2:12

Fasting isn’t about rules. It’s about reconnection.

And while you don’t need to involve your children directly, letting them see you fast, pray, and prioritize time with God is a beautiful example of faith in action.

🪞 Model It for Your Children

The best way to help your children hear God’s voice?

Let them watch you.

Let them see you:

  • Pray about decisions

  • Celebrate answered prayers

  • Pause and ask for guidance

  • Talk about how the Holy Spirit helped you

Say things like:

“I felt like God nudged me to help that person today.”
“I asked God for patience and He reminded me to be kind—it changed how I saw the whole situation.”

🕊️ Final Takeaway

The world is loud.
But God’s voice? It’s still, steady, and always present.

Let’s be the kind of parents who make room for that voice.

Who model what it means to listen.
Who help our kids understand that their Heavenly Father wants to speak to them—today, tomorrow, and every day after.

And when they learn to recognize that voice, they’ll walk through life with peace, purpose, and faith that stands strong no matter what the world throws their way.
