The Incredible Power of Your Words: How to Speak Life Daily
May 02, 2025
Words seem simple.
Ordinary, even.
We speak thousands of them a day without giving them much thought.
But Scripture tells us something different.
Words aren't simple — they’re powerful.
They're either building something... or they're tearing something down.
Watch on YouTube or listen on Raising Faithful Families podcast.
Proverbs 18:21 reminds us:
"The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Let's dive into the incredible gift and responsibility God has given us through the words we speak.
Why Our Words Carry So Much Weight
Words are not neutral.
They either align with God’s truth and build up, or they sow fear, confusion, discouragement.
"Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire..." (James 3:5-6)
Even though the tongue is a small part of the body, it carries immense influence. That’s why Scripture gives clear instructions:
"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." — Ephesians 4:29
Our words are meant to build up. To give grace.
That’s our blueprint.
How Words Shape Identity and Atmosphere
This isn't just theory — it plays out in real life every single day.
Craig Groeschel, pastor and leadership expert, often shares how speaking life over his church, himself, and his family changed the reality they lived in.
He declared:
"I am disciplined. Christ in me is stronger than the wrong desires in me."
— long before he felt disciplined. Over time, his words shaped his reality.
Joyce Meyer also shares about speaking Scripture over her emotions, even when she didn’t "feel" strong — and how God used that practice to heal deep wounds.
The words you choose create the world you live in.
They frame your mindset.
They create the culture of your home.
They shape your relationships.
They guide your parenting.
They even impact the way you think about yourself.
Speaking Life in My Own Home
As a mother, I’m deeply aware of how much weight my words carry.
In my home, I’m careful not to speak things over my child that I wouldn't want to see become reality.
Even joking, I don't say:
❌ "He’s difficult."
❌ "He never listens."
Instead, I intentionally speak life:
✅ "You are such a good listener."
✅ "God made you strong, wise, and capable."
✅ "You are a kind leader and a blessing to others."
Even on hard days, I separate behavior correction from identity.
Because words plant seeds — and I want to be planting the right ones.
The Biblical Foundation for Speaking Life
Throughout Scripture, we see how seriously God takes words.
-
God spoke the world into existence.
-
Jesus is called "the Word made flesh" (John 1:14), embodying truth, grace, and power.
-
James reminds us to be slow to speak and quick to listen (James 1:19).
Words are powerful because they reflect the very nature of God.
And because of that, we have a calling:
-
To steward our words with intentionality.
-
To build up, not tear down.
-
To speak truth, encouragement, and hope.
5 Practical Ways to Start Speaking Life Today
If you’re wondering where to even begin, here are a few simple practices:
✅ Bless Instead of Curse
When you're frustrated, choose to bless—even internally.
✅ Affirm God’s Truth
Speak Scripture over your life and your family daily.
✅ Pause Before You Speak
Before reacting, breathe. Ask: “Will these words build or break down?”
✅ Be Specific in Encouragement
Instead of vague praise, name exactly what you admire or appreciate.
✅ Speak Faith Over Situations
Even in hardship, speak hope:
“I don’t know how this will work out, but I trust that God is working.”
Encouragement for Your Heart
Friend, God cares deeply about your words —
Not because He wants you living in fear of saying the wrong thing,
but because He knows the power He's placed in your voice.
You have the ability to:
🌟 Speak life
🌟 Speak hope
🌟 Speak healing
Let's take that seriously.
Not with fear — but with awe, joy, and purpose.
You are called to speak words that align with the heart of God —
at home, at work, and into the world.
